Remember China? • Last Emperor was a child, exiled as Western nations divided the country into spheres of influence • Last Emperor under house arrest in the Forbidden City • China slowly becoming a modern country
Sun-Yat-Sen • Hawaiian-educated • Becomes leader of Triads in China • Leads the overthrow of the emperor and becomes first President of China • Fought against warlords to keep China unified
Nationalists • Chiang Kai-Shek • In charge after Sun’s death • Defeated the warlords • Unified China • Orders the purge of the Communists
Long March • Communists flee. Set out on the “Long March” • Covered 18 mountain ranges, 20 rivers, 6,000 miles. • Many deaths: • Hunger • Disease • Nationalist attacks • 100,000 set out, 8,000 reached their goal.
New Communist leader • Mao Zedong (Mao-Tse-Tung) • Admired Soviet Communism • Led a small uprising in Hunan province • Soon became leader of the entire communist party
Japanese Imperialism • Take advantage of China’s problems and attack. • Communists and Nationalists join forces to fight Japanese. • Many peasant soldiers learn of Communism and join the party. • Nationalists take most of the losses
After WWII • In 1949, Communists defeat the Nationalists • Nationalists fled to Taiwan • Mao becomes the first premier of the People’s Republic of China

Cultural Revolution • Designed to re-educate people about Communism • Mao needs to regain popularity after the failed Great Leap Forward • Encourages young people to abolish the old and create new ideas
Red Guard • Young people who traveled China “educating” people about Communism during the Cultural Revolution
Failure • The Cultural Revolution failed, and was ended in 1969. • Economy was nearly destroyed • Hundreds of innocent people were dead or in jail • Much of China’s history was destroyed • Many young people were left uneducated • 1976 – Mao died
Striving for Democracy • After Mao’s death, the economy grows • People with money want control over their own lives • Tiananmen Square protests • Massacre
