  3. Form of Writing • Acrostic Poem • What is an acrostic poem? An acrostic poem uses letters in a topic word to begin each line. All lines in the poem should relate to or describe the topic word.

Practice Activity for Prewriting • Ask students to choose a topic: “Today, our topic will be the season, Fall.” • The teacher and student will use the acrostic graphic organizer to write ideas about the topic, Fall. • Brainstorm a list of words, ideas, or phrases that describe the topic word and write them in your organizer. You will want some words or phrases to begin with a letter(s) from the topic word.

Stage of WritingDrafting • Acrostic Poetry is formed by writing a topic word vertically down the page • Each line will start with one letter from the topic word • Each line must begin with a capital letter • May use one word or a phrase • Does not have to rhyme • Use adjectives and phrases that describe the word

Practice Activity for Drafting • The teacher and students will write an acrostic poem together using the acrostic graphic organizer from prewriting. • Let students give you some of their ideas about the season, Fall. • Transcribe the students’ ideas in the form of acrostic poetry, while they dictate.

  12. Assessment Activity for Drafting • The students will use their prewriting graphic organizer to write their own acrostic poem. • Students will complete their acrostic poems on construction paper. • Each poem must describe the students’ name and be written vertically down the left side of page. And each letter in the vertical word must begin the next line.
