Planning Your Regional Workshop Carol Ormand and Heather Macdonald June, 2016
Goals of this session Each team will • Draft goals and an agenda for your regional workshop • Get feedback from the project leaders and from other Change Agents • Start drafting pages in your workshop website
Guidelines for Regional Workshops • The workshop goals will be aligned with the goals of the SAGE 2YC: Faculty as Change Agents Project. • Over the four years of the project, regional workshops will address all of the SAGE 2YC project goals. • Format and timing: one full day, with a primary audience of geoscience 2YC faculty • The workshop program will follow the principles of effective workshop design described on our website (see below) • The workshop will use standard SAGE 2YC workshop registration and evaluation forms, which we will provide and which you can customize by adding or selecting questions. • Change Agent teams may discuss with the project leaders workshop elements they want to implement that don't appear to fit these expectations. http://serc.carleton.edu/sage2yc/CA-workspace/guidelines.html
Goals of your regional workshop What are your goals for your regional workshop? How are your goals aligned with the SAGE 2YC project goals?
Effective Workshop Design • The activities of the workshop follow directly from the workshop goals, just as effective teaching activities follow directly from student learning goals. • The workshop actively engages participants in learning. Effective workshops actively engage participants and provide opportunities both for participants to learn from one another and to make progress on applying what they have learned in the workshop to their own teaching situations. • Workshop sessions are planned, down to the minute. Good workshops that appear to flow spontaneously reflect extensive planning by leaders, a clear understanding of the program and its objectives by everyone involved, and realistic planning for how long session activities will really take. http://serc.carleton.edu/sage2yc/CA-workspace/guidelines.html
Design Your Workshop to Meet Your Goals • For each goal, ask yourself, “What could we do, or have workshop participants do, to ensure that we meet this goal?” • Make sure that each workshop session directly contributes to meeting one or more of the workshop goals • If necessary, revise your workshop goals as you develop the program. For example, you might discover that your goals are too ambitious for the time available. • Think beyond topics/session titles. How will you engage workshop participants in learning about the topics? • Think about resources. What resources do you need that you already have? What resources will you need to find?
Begin Drafting Your Workshop Website • Find the link to your program page from this session on today’s agenda: http://serc.carleton.edu/sage2yc/workshops/june2016/program.html#Fri • Start typing. Note: there is an example agenda on your page already; type your agenda above that one. Use similar formatting if you can. • Rory, Carol, Eric, and others can help with website editing if you have questions.
Peer Review Workshop Agendas • Pair up with the same team that reviewed your workshop goals • Review each other’s workshop programs, using the rubric and guiding questions provided • Does it meet the guidelines for SAGE 2YC regional workshops? • Do you know of resources that would be of interest to the other team? • Time permitting: continue workshop planning or work on your other workshop website pages
