  1. Transistors - What’s So Big About ‘Em?

  2. Introduction KWLD • What do you know about transistors? • What do you want to know about transistors?

  3. Check it Out • In which circuit did we hear a buzz? • Why?

  4. Team Challenge Goal: Find out what a transistor is and be able to describe how it works. Materials List • 1 – 2N7000 N-CH-ENH_MOSFET • 1 – DPST switch • 1 – LED (Light Emitting Diode) • Breadboard • Breadboard wire pack (pre-trimmed wires for making connections on the breadboard) • Needle nose pliers • 6V battery pack (includes 4 – “AA” batteries)

  5. Team Challenge • Find the 6V battery pack, a transistor, an LED (Light Emitting Diode), and a switch from your kit. • Wire the circuit as shown in the diagram. • Be sure that the long lead on the LED is connected to the power side, not the transistor side.

  6. Observations and Analysis • What determines whether or not the LED lights up? • What connects the source to the drain? • How does a transistor serve as an on/off switch?

  7. Conclusions Finish the KWLD • What did you learn about transistors? • What can you do with what you learned about transistors?

  8. Make the Connection • The only real difference between islands and oceans is the concentration of the two materials. • Islands are mostly sand with a little water. • Oceans are mostly water with a little sand.

  9. Make the Connection • Change the concentration of water and sand!

  10. Make the Connection • The NMOS Transistor
