OCLC CJK Users group forum Charlene Chou March 27th , 2014
Agenda • Greeting and report from the Chair, Charlene Chou (5 minutes) • Report from the OCLC representative, David Whitehair (30 minutes) • Q & A (15 minutes)
Who we are—Executive Board, 2012-2014 • Chair: Charlene Chou (University of Washington) • Vice Chair/Chair-Elect: Shuyong Jiang (University of Illinois) • Chinese Officer: Jade Atwill (Penn State University) • Japanese Officer: Hikaru Nakano (University of Florida) • Korean Officer: Erica Chang (University of Hawaii) • Member at Large: Keiko Suzuki (Yale University) • Member at Large: XiuyingZou (University of Pittsburgh) • Past Chair: Sharon Domier (University of Massachusetts, Amherst)
What we did • Four Webinars held in the past two years • Searching for CJK material in WorldCat using FirstSearch • Using Macros in Connexion for CJK Materials: Basic Session • Using Macros in Connexion for CJK Materials: Advanced Session • Using Collection Analysis Tool for Managing CJK Collections • HKCAN portal: with MARC view option available in summer 2013 • Other issues communicated with OCLC: • Korean records loading, e.g. records from the National Library of Korea • The follow-up of CALIS records: no update
What we did • Other issues communicated with OCLC: • Field 987 (Local Romanization/Conversion History) • On 12/10/2013, OCLC was proposing to remove the remaining fields and invalidate the field for both online input and batchloading. The removal process is expected to start later this month (Dec. 2013). • OCLC-CJK UG feedback--there are still bibliographic records with value "r" (as opposed to "c" or "n") under field 987-|d indicating necessity for manual review of Chinese romanization. Should they be retained to alert catalogers? There are at least some MRs in WC with: 987 __ PINYIN ... |d r ... • OCLC response: Glenn Patton was still in discussions with some of his colleagues on how they might preserve this information.
What we did • Connexion Client enhancement request: some examples • Spell-checking function to authority records • In the authority record, can the institutional symbol in 040 field show its full name when we lay mouse over it like it for the bibliographic record? • Add warning function when authority 4XX in NAF normalizes the same as 1XX in another record in NAF • Include our CJK Toolkit in the OCLC website or a link to Connexion client • A global/batch update function for the local save files, such as batch delete, find, and/or replace a certain string across the records in the whole file with one single request, apply one macro to all records in the file at a time, etc. • Undo function for unlimited steps as the one in Office Word • Can OCLC create macros/drop-down lists for all controlled vocabularies/codes/terms, e.g. relationship designators, in the variable fields? A good model to follow is exactly like the existing fixed fields and 33x macros. • Automated punctuation filling in ISBD
What we did & will do • Remaining issues: • Accurate holding information for different editions of an item; • Successful linking between WorldCat local and the OPAC of libraries that have holdings of the item being searched • Nomination committee: Shuyong, Hikaru and Xiuying • Bylaws committee: Shuyong, Jade and Hikaru • The bylaws was revised in 1993, so the revisions will be proposed, announced and voted after CEAL meeting. • Upcoming activities • World Discovery Services will be released to replace FirstSearch in March. • WorldShare Metadata Record Manager will be released to replace Connexion by later this year.
