TETRA (CERN’s Safety Radio Communication Network) Speaker : Frédéric CHAPRON IT-CS Tetra forum 7th of February 2013
Why TETRA ? • Replacement of the old VHF network of the Fire Brigade because of many weaknesses • Remember that the GSM network is NOT a safety network • TETRA stands for Terrestrial Trunked Radio • Digital technology designed for safety group communications • Widely used in the world to ensure critical communications for police, rescue organizations, army, etc… • TETRA is a standard of the European Telecom Standard Institute FrédéricChapron IT-CS Tetra Forum 7th of February 2013
Objectives of the project • A fully-secured radio network • Reliability, high availability, and resiliency • Cover all indoor CERN sites and CERN surroundings on surface • Always guarantee communications for the fire brigade • Enable Swiss and French fire brigades to use their own radios in CERN underground facilities • Be ready to manage the higher risk of safety incidents during LS1 • Many co-activities & Many people • Bring new features for the needs of the Fire Brigade and CERN • Develop an indoor localization system coupled with a man-down feature to serve a lone worker protect mechanism under certain circumstances Frédéric Chapron IT-CS Tetra Forum 7th of February 2013
Objectives of the project • Integrate in the network other user communities (security/CSA, transport, experiments, maintenance teams…) Contrôle room EXCR One group of communication Fire Brigade Dispatcher CSA Fireman Intervention Area Electrical piquet Fireman Frédéric Chapron IT-CS Tetra Forum 7th of February 2013
Remember • The TETRA network is a safety network made first for the fire brigade and also for YOU. • It allows the CERN fire brigade to intervene faster in case of incident • Allow easy cooperation between CERN’s safety and security players: • Typically this is the right network to guarantee communications during an event like the Open Days Frédéric Chapron IT-CS Tetra Forum 7th of February 2013
