  3. What is deviance? • What is it? • What does it mean to be deviant? • Why does society not like deviance? • Does deviance have to be bad? • Why do we assume it is? • Why is extreme deviance attractive?

  4. Deviance Defined… • Deviance: Any behaviour or thought which is considered against the norms for any specific situation • Norms: A term used to define normal • Normal: A social construction – a set of predictable responses to any given responses

  5. Why does society not like deviance? • Because it is unpredictable! • Society likes it when it can predict what will happen with 100% certainty. • What happens if it can’t? What does society do when it cannot predict behaviour? What does society do to make sure people conform? What are the two kinds of it?

  12. What do they have in common? They are extreme examples of deviance and we are attracted to them for the same reasons…

  13. Your mission… • Pair up with someone who has access to wifi or a data plan… find a news article on cnn.com, cbc.ca, msn.ca, or ctv.cathat reflects deviance • Be prepared to share! • A. What happened? • B. How is this deviance? How do we see unpredictable action? Did it continue in spite of some kind of social control?
