Programs • The following specialized programs are available at CPA. Students in these programs will be receiving addition certificates upon completion of their grade 12 year. • French Immersion (FI) • International Baccalaureate (IB) • Options and Opportunities (O2) striveforexcellence
French Immersion • Students must complete at least 9 French Immersion (FI) credits in order to receive a FI certificate. • Students in the FI program must complete: • Francais-Immersion 10 – Grade 10 • Francais-Immersion 11 – Grade 11 • Francais-Immersion 12 – Grade 12 • Plus 6 more credits FI credits striveforexcellence
International Baccalaureate Students in the IB program will/can receive • High School Graduation Diploma • IB Diploma: 6 courses + TOK/Essay/CAS with a minimum point total of 24 • French immersion diploma: 4 grade 10 FI + French HL/Histoire SL • Bilingual Diploma for students taking Histoire SL • Individual certificates: for each IB course
Options and Opportunities Students in O2 will/can receive • High school graduation diploma • O2 diploma • Guaranteed admissions to NSCC
Graduation Requirements • All non IB students need to meet the following graduation requirements • 18 credits • 13 compulsory credits • 5 elective credits Maximum 7 grade 10 coded credits Minimum 5 grade 12 coded credits Counsellors will be meeting individually with students to determine graduation eligibility striveforexcellence
Graduation Requirements • 13 Compulsory Credits • 3 English – one from each grade level • 2 Math – from two different grade levels • 2 Science – Science10 and one other • 2 Technology (extra Math/Science) • 1 Fine Arts • 1 Physical Education • 1 Canadian History • 1 Global Studies
Academic Planning Nova Scotia High School graduation requirements are not aligned with post-secondary requirements. Academies of Learning • Academies of Learning are intended to help students figure out the many courses/paths available to them at the high school level/post-secondary level. Each Academy includes: • a short description • typical career opportunities • interests and abilities of students These Academies should allow students to gain an insight on typical career opportunities and applicable courses.

University Requirements • Typical requirements for several post-secondary programs (all courses are at the grade 12 level) • Bachelor of Arts – English plus 4 other academic courses • Bachelor of Science – English, Pre-Calculus, two Sciences plus one other academic course striveforexcellence
University Requirements • Bachelor of Engineering – English, Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, Physics plus 1 other academic course • Bachelor of Computer Science – English, Pre-Calculus plus 3 other academic courses • Bachelor of Nursing – English, Math, Chemistry, Biology plus 1 other academic course • Bachelor of Commerce – English, Mathematics (in some cases, Pre-Calculus) plus 3 other academic courses • Not all course coded as academic will be accepted by every university – please check striveforexcellence
NSCC Requirements The Nova Scotia Community College requires a grade 12 diploma and may require specific subject requirements depending on the program students are interested in. • Students are able to apply to NSCC in their grade 11 year. The Application Process • Application: Usually done online. Some programs have supplementary application forms or requirements (audition or portfolio) • Ontario applications are sent to a central application site www.ouac.on.ca which then sends them to the universities. • Fee: A processing fee must be paid ~$40.00. Some post-secondary institutions and/or programs may have supplementary processing fees. • Transcript: Post-secondary institution will need an official transcript of marks. Universities usually want first semester marks. First Semester transcripts are available on Feb 15th from guidance.
Admission Averages Grade 12 students usually apply to university at the end of the first semester. Some grade 11 marks are used in conjunction with the first semester grade 12 marks to determine admission averages and award scholarships. Averages are based on the admission requirements for each program. Universities often set minimum overall averages and/or minimum marks. However actual averages may be higher depending on the school and program
Scholarships and Awards • Some universities/post-secondary institutions do not require a special application for entrance scholarships as students who have been admitted are automatically considered – it is imperative to apply before the deadline. Some schools may require additional paper work. • Companies, Organization, Groups and Individuals These scholarships can often be used at any post-secondary institutions. They also usually have well laid out criteria – marks, leadership, community involvement, etc. These are posted in guidance as they come in • CPA Awards CPA awards application is available in October and due mid-May. • Scholarship websites to check out: www.scholarshipscanada.com , www.studentawards.com
Post-secondary visits Post-Secondary Day: • Most Atlantic institutions will at CPA on October 14th from 9:30 till 10:30. Two sign-up sessions will then be available from 10:30 till 11:00 and 11:00 till 11:30. Representative Visits • University and other post-secondary representatives will be visiting our school during the school year to meet with students. The dates, locations and times of these meetings will be announced, posted outside the guidance office and in the cafeteria. Typically the sessions are at lunch hour. Open Houses • Universities will have open houses where students can go to the school for the day – have a tour, sit in on classes and talk to advisors. Some will have parent days as well. Locally these sessions will occur in the late fall and again in February/March. United States Universities • Students considering applying to universities in the United States may need to write the S.A.T. Reasoning Test. These tests require registration about 6 weeks in advance. Application is online www.collegeboard.com (school code – 825121), and are written at Dalhousie.
