Filmless Medical Imaging for TBHMaking IT work for the patient Dr Otto Schulze Project Leader
Our current problems! • Increasing demand for specialized imaging (>500 images/patient on MDCT/MRI) • Repeat examinations (No post-processing) • Lost films & packets (Repeat examinations & no comparison) • Not all images are printed (Lost information 20 images/sheet) • Plain film X-rays (Dark room personnel, Chemicals, Film) • Storage is labour intensive, occupies space & problems (Lost reports, packets, films) • Poor communication with referring doctor (Wait for examination, reports, films & dependent on physical transport) • Radiology opinion limited (Staffing in peripheral hospitals) • Long waiting periods
An Enterprise wide Integrated HIS-RIS –PACS-Equipment solution • Enterprise wide • A hospital solution, not a radiology solution • Integrated • Communication between the different information systems • HIS (Hospital Information System) • The reception clerk & the patient sticker • RIS (Radiological Information System) • The paper: Requests, Tick sheets, Reports • PACS (Picture Archiving & Communication System) • The X-ray packet & film • Equipment • Digital Imaging Modalities
Interdependent Information Systems Digital Imaging Modalities PACS RIS HIS IT
Current status of project Mindmap Timeline
How is this going to affect you? • What will you get? • Faster access to imaging • Faster access to reports • Legible reports • Access to images & reports from home • What will the patient get? • Shorter waiting times • Better medical opinion due to improved comparison • Quicker decision-making due to improved communication • Reduced exposure to radiation due to no unnecessary examinations • Scheduling, preparation and examination information available to patient
How is this going to affect you? • What will you have to do? • Electronic requests for examinations • EMERGENCY cases handled telephonically • Electronic Scheduling • Electronic tracking of patient status • Electronic viewing of images and reports
What do we need from you? • Educate yourselves • www.sun.ac.za/pacs • Organise departmental information sessions • Indentify departmental champions • Identify personnel requiring basic IT skills • Participate in the implementation • Placement of viewing stations • Medico-legal issues
