Parts of Speech Language Arts 10 Grammar Review
NOUN • A person, place or thing • Can be used as a subject EX: The DOG went outside. • Can be used as an object for a verb EX: The BOY kicked the BALL.
PRONOUN • A word that substitutes for a noun EX: HE decided to walk to the movies. EX: There is nothing for you to do.
ARTICLE • While technically not a part of speech, articles serve an important purpose! • Any word used to signal the presence of a noun A, AN, THE
CONJUNCTION • A word that connects other words, phrases or sentences • You can remember conjunctions by thinking: FANBOYS • For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So • You can also use Because as a conjunction EX: She was going to walk but then it started to rain.
ADJECTIVE • A word or combination of words that modifies (or describes) a noun EX: Her blue jacket is really old. EX: Thetemporary parking lot is looking full.
VERB • A word that expresses action, existence or occurrence EX: I ranfourmiles today. EX: They decided their puppyneeded a haircut.
ADVERB • A word that modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb • You can usually tell an adverb because it ends in “-ly.” • “Very” is another common adverb! EX: Jen walkedslowly through thedoor. EX: Theorange snakeslowlymadeitsway through theclassroom.
PREPOSITION • A word that shows a relationship of a noun to another noun • There are MANY prepositions! They help tell how or where something is going! • By, in, to, from, with, through, above, beyond, etc. Shedecidedto come throughthefrontdoor.
INTERJECTION • Interjections are often the forgotten “part of speech!” • Words that do one of the following: • Expresses a feeling: wow, gee, oops, etc. • Says yes or no: yes, no, yep, nope, uh-huh, etc. • Calls attention: yo, hey, whoa, etc. • Indicates a pause: well, um, hmm, ah, etc. EX: Wow, thatisagorgeousdress!
TRICKY WORDS • Words like: that, this, those, these, here, and there are very tricky. • In most cases, those words are taking the place of a noun and serve as a pronoun in the sentence. • They also serve as direct and indirect objects. • For our practice, you can skip these words. We will be working with them later on.
PRACTICE • Write down the following sentences in your notebook. Label each word with its part of speech. • My silly dog Sadie likes to dig in the garden. • You should always do your homework! • I like to eat pizza, but it isn’t very good for me. • Yay! I love going to school! • Ms. K went over parts of speech thoroughly, but I am still confused.
Sentence 1: MysillydogSadielikestodiginthegarden. Why isn’t “dig” considered to be a noun?
Sentence 2: Youshouldalwaysdoyourhomework!
Sentence 3: Iliketoeatpizza, butitisn’tverygoodforme. Why is “to” considered to be a verb?
Sentence 4: Yay!Ilovegoingtoschool!
Sentence 5: Ms. K wentoverparts of speechthoroughly, butIamstillconfused. This was a hard one!
