Mixtures What is a mixture? • In chemistry, a mixture is defined as a combination of two or more substances. • Mixtures can all be solids, all liquids, all gases, or combinations of solids, liquids, and gases.
Mixtures - A Procedure: 1. Label two cups using self-sticky notes. • Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and Sodium chloride (NaCl) 2. Measure two level spoons of CaCO3 into one cup. 3. Measure two level spoons of NaCl into second cup. 4. Observe the two solid substances with a hand lens. • Record your observations 5. Use a syringe to add 20 mL of water to each cup. • Stir, observe, and record observations.
Mixtures - A What Happened after mixing with water? • CaCO3 • NaCl
Mixtures - A Two things are true regarding mixtures. • They can be made by putting substances together. • They can be separated into their original substances.
Mixtures What methods can we use to separate these two mixtures? • Filtration • Evaporation
Mixtures - B Procedures: 1. Label two cups: • Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) - filtered and Sodium chloride (NaCl) - filtered 2. Set up funnel stand and place filter paper in funnel. 3. Place the empty cup labeled (NaCl) - filtered under the filter funnel. Pour the sodium chloride mixture into filter. Place used filter on a labeled paper towel. 4. Repeat the process with the calcium carbonate mixture.
Mixtures - A Define solution. What is the different between a solute and solvent? Solution – a mixture of two substances where one substance looks like one disappears in the other. Solute – substance that dissolves Solvent – substance in which the solute dissolves Ex: salt (solute); water (solvent).
Mixtures - A Draw evaporation tray and label. *Add 10 drops into each well tray. *After evaporation results. H2O 1 CaCO3 5 NaCl 9
Mixtures 1. “Getters’ retrieve materials. 2. Complete data tables & diagrams. 3. Discuss filter paper. 4. Discuss evaporation tray.
Mixtures Conclusion: Filter paper! What happened when you tried to separate the NaCl and CaCO3 from the water in the two mixtures? What mixture did the filter paper separate the two substances? Why Why didn’t the filter paper separate the two substances? (NaCl & H2O)
Mixtures Conclusion: Evaporation! Does liquid evaporate in each well? What was left in each well? Can you separate: NaCl from water? How? CaCO3 from water? How? Which mixture is a solution? Simple mixture?
