What makes a sentence? Looking at 3 sentence structures in English
Take a couple of minutes to think about the questions below.
But… A clause is a group of words which contains at least a subject and a verb. In this, clauses are like sentences, and a clause may stand as a sentence if it makes sense as a complete thought. (independent clause) However, clauses are not always a complete thought and so may need to be joined with other clauses to express a complete thought, and become a sentence. (dependent clause)
Find the subject, verb and object in each of the sentences below.
Answers • The teacher giveshomework once a week. • Annegoes to college three times a week. • John ate his delicious chocolate cake in the college canteen.
Simple Sentence The teacher gives homework once a week. Compound Sentence Anne goes to college 3 times a week andshe likes it a lot. Complex Sentence The teacher gives homework once a week,which is every Thursday.
Identify the simple, compound and complex sentences in the text below. I think London is a great city. It has lots of interesting museums. There are some beautiful parks and fantastic theatres.
