Objectives • To initiate the establishment of chapters throughout the Lebanese territory • To provide access of the less privileged to modern approaches to Alzheimer’s disease • To improve the capacities, knowledge and procedural skills of people concerning dementia.
Phase one • Define a target group and develop a proposal • Cover as much territory as possible in different areas through out Lebanon • Assess the social health staff working in the Community Development Centers (180) pertaining to the Ministry of Social Affairs - MoSA • Present the proposal to the Ministry of Social Affairs
Success issues… • Obtained the approval of the Ministry of Social Affairs - MoSA • Got a full mapping of all CDC in all the lebanese territories • Defined exact numbers as per provinces, regions and locations
Methods • One day training sessions for health & social workers in the CDCs. • Monitoring & follow up to ensure that all services and awareness are consistent with the International standards related to Alzheimer’s disease. • Implement a national "train the trainer" workshop for selected local representatives. • Assessment & identification of people with Alzheimer’s disease in all geographical areas & training representatives from potential local NGOs working in related field.
Phase two • Provide lecturers and trainers • Work on the development of a comprehensive training toolkit.
Another success issue… Zeina Chemali, M. D., MPH • Neuro psychiatry, MD. • Volunteered to cover a 6 days training August 1-6 • Member of the Scientific committee of AAL • Asst. Professor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School Director, Neuropsychiatry Group Director, Neuropsychiatry Fellowship Dep.Medical Director, Div.Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology Memory Disorders Unit Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Direct Beneficiaries • More than 200 nurses and social workers from CDCs located nationwide be assessed and trained to better understand Alzheimer’s disease as well as provide adequate support to family members. • An estimated 120 persons from different areas of Lebanon will be trained to become resource contacts for issues related to Alzheimer’s disease. • Hopefully!!!
Indirect Beneficiaries • Thousands of people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families will benefit from the improved services provided by nurses and social workers whose skills are developed. • Stigma enlightened and knowledge enriched.

Conclusion - Sustainability • Within its Training of Trainers component, including the didactic toolkit and manuals, the project has built-in sustainability features • On completion of the project, AAL will continue working with other care centers using the toolkit and relying on its technical committee • Publish a study that encompasses all the quantitative and qualitative information gathered within the framework of this project.
