  1. Teen Pregnancy Case Study 2 The provider has finished their exam of R.S. and has ordered some lab work. A urine pregnancy test comes back positive. In addition the provider feels that the Herpes Simplex Virus culture will come back positive, and tells R.S. this. When you go back into the room R.S. is visibly upset. Click start to move through the scenario. START

  2. Nurse Options RS has just found out she is pregnant and is visibly upset. Select the statement that you feel would be most appropriate for the nurse to say to RS: • I see you are dressed. Are you ready to go over this information about pregnancy care? • Please don’t cry, many girls your age get pregnant and do just fine. • I know how hard this is. We see a lot of pregnant teens, so I understand exactly what you are going through. • I can see you are upset. I’m here if you want to talk. START

  3. Patient Response • Shrugs. I guess. This is not the correct response. Click ‘Next’ to go back and select a different response! Next

  4. Nurse Options RS says: It’s just that I never thought this would happen. I thought as long as I took the pill when I remembered too, I would be fine. My mom is going to kill me. Select the statement that you feel would be most appropriate for the nurse to say to RS next: • The pill only works effectively if you take it at the same time every day. Also, it is important to use condoms every time you have sex to prevent infections. • It sounds as though you are worried about telling your mom. How do you think she will react? • I know that this feels very scary and upsetting now, but everything happens for a reason and you will be just fine. I promise. • I’m sure your mom won’t kill you. She will be very upset, but you are her daughter and she loves you. Parents only want what’s best for their children. START

  5. Patient Response 2. I’m not sure. I know she is going to be really mad, but she won’t kick me out or anything. I just don’t understand how this could have happened. Can you explain this to me? This is the correct response. Click ‘Next’ to continue. Next

  6. Nurse Options RS says: I’m not sure. I know she is going to be really mad, but she won’t kick me out or anything. I just don’t understand how this could have happened. Can you explain this to me? Select the statement that you feel would be most appropriate for the nurse to say to RS next: • I can help explain this to you. Do you have any questions in particular? • Anytime you are sexually active you risk pregnancy and infection. • I thought the doctor already went over this? • If you are old enough to be having sex you should be old enough to know how this happened. START

  7. Assignment In a written scenario it can often be easy to look at answers and select the “right” one. However, in real life it is not always so simple and we can often slip back into comforting, false hope, clichés, etc. Please submit to the dropbox a one page reflection (as a Word document) that discusses how you think you would feel in this situation in real life. What do you think you would excel at in terms of communication, and where do you think you would struggle? END
