  1. Back to Basics: See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. 1 John 2:18-29

  2. Review! • What is one of the main reasons why John is writing this letter to believers?

  3. False Teachers • Antichrists = literally, against the anointed one Matthew 24:4-5, 24-25: Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many…. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time.”

  4. John writes to encourage people • V. 19, they vs. us • Verses 20-21 and 26-27 • Anointing from God • John 16:13: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.”

  5. John also writes to instruct on how to remain in the Truth • V. 24-25: See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us-even eternal life. What did they hear from the beginning?

  6. 1 John 1:1-2 • That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

  7. What was heard from the beginning?: • 1 John 1:1-3 -> Jesus is the son of God

  8. 1 John 2:7-10 • Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in himto make him stumble.

  9. 1 John 3:11 • This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.

  10. What was heard from the beginning?: 1. 1 John 1:1-3 -> Jesus is the son of God 2. 1 John 2:7-10, 3:11 -> love one another Two of the tests for salvation: the doctrinal test and the social test

  11. What does this mean for us?

  12. How to keep from deception and know you have eternal life, according to John 1. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide us into the truth

  19. What does love look like? • Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” • John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” • 1 John 3:16 “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” • John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

  20. Philippians 2:3-4 • Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  21. Who are we called to love? • Luke 6:32-34 • Matthew 5:44 • Luke 6:35

  22. How do we love? • “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5)
