Power transmission or combination power/optical transmission • The unique features of optical fibres almost exclusively call for the combination of power transmission and optical data transmission • Composite AC/FO cables represents the easy solution as FO elements can be integrated to the cable structure at the interstices between the power phases, however, mostly for short-haul applications • FO cable or FO elements into DC systems more challenging: • FO cable ”piggy backed” onto the DC cable, savings mainly on simultaneous installation • FO cable part of the DC cable, same technology as for repeater cables, but expanding on voltage rating, copper cross section and including return conductor
Tailor made designs Not to scale ! Limited DC designs, mostly AC designs
DCFO – not a new concept • What is meant by DCFO ? • DCFO is a name for cable with both power feed and aptical transmission capability • Partly developed for offshore oil and gas applications for control and operation of sub-sea valves several hundred km from the oil platform or floating production unit • Power transmission capacity limited, less than 100 kW at output • Cable structure consists of two electrical elements (one for power transmission and one for return current) and one optical element
What drives the DCFO cable design ? • Transmission distance and power rating at cable output (MW) • Operating voltage (i.e. requirements to insulation system), conductor cross section, depth rating, mechanical strength (tensile/crush/impact), protection • Life time expectancy: 25 to 40 years, i.e. selection of key materials against ageing • Combination with optical fibres, number of fibres, types of fibres • Handling/installations characteristics (e.g. weight air/submerged, coilability) including the land portion of the system • Ease of repair/termination
Optical repeater cables are examples of DCFO Features: up to 16 optical fibres, 15 kV power feeding, 220 KW at output 150 km
How to reach 2 MW over 300 km ? Way forward. • Need to define all requirements carefully • Increase power rating (36 to 76 kV ??), definitely add more insulation • Increase copper content to lower ohmic resistance, i.e. lower power loss over the cable • Complete design study and propose cable design and development/qualification program • Develop and qualify cable and cable joint
