Internet Protocol - IP • Provides unique global addresses amongst computers • Much like a phone number or street addresses for internet connected devices • Uniquely identifies specific computers/network devices on a network • Connectionless protocol, doesn’t need a prior connection before a host sends packets

  3. IP Addresses • Limited availability of static IP addresses • Internet service providers use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol to assign dynamic IP addresses Temporary identifier during current internet sessions (much like a temporary phone number) • Static IP addresses are used for devices such as Servers which require a continues internet connection

  4. Availability of IP Addresses • Availability of IP addresses is decreasing due to spread of computers • IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses • IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses  Provides more combinations of unique addresses

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) • Set of rules used by communication devices such as computer, routers, or network adapters to obtain IP Addresses • Insures all IP Addresses are unique • Allows for network admin to distribute from a central point  Automatically distributes IP addresses when a computer is plugged into a different location on a network • Distribute very short IP address leases for users that don’t require a permanent connection

Link between IP Address and Domain Names • There are more websites then servers • Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) specifies the name being used • This allows one server with one IP address to provide different sites for different domains • A hostname is a domain name assigned to a host • A hostname is translated into an IP address via the local host file • A host file – provides a map from the hostname to the IP Address

  7. What does a Web Browser do? • Web browsers (the client) communicate with Web servers primarily using HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) to fetch webpages. • HTTP allows Web browsers to submit information to Web servers as well as fetch Web pages from them.
