PRODUCTIVITY OUTPUT PRODUCTIVITY = –––––––– INPUT To improve productivity, organizations try to do more with less. They may maintain the quantity of input, yet increase the output. OR They may reduce the input and yet be able to increase the output.
SUGGESTION SCHEMES Productivity techniques require an organizational culture in which: • Everybody trusts each other • There is open communication • There is teamwork • There is effective industrial relations

QUALITY CONTROL CIRCLES A quality control circle is a group of workers who meet regularly in order to identify, analyse and solve work-related problems.
QUALITY CONTROL CIRCLES (cont.) • QCCs consist of 5–15 volunteers from the same department/section/unit. • The members meet regularly to identify, analyse and find a solution to a problem relating to their work. • The members make an oral presentation of their solution to the management before implementing it.

ENCOURAGING COMMITMENT Committed employees: • Want their organization to succeed. • Want to help their organization to succeed. • Will take the initiative and ‘walk the extra mile’ to ensure the success of their organization.
ENCOURAGING COMMITMENT (cont.) To encourage commitment, organizations must: • Recruit the right people • Provide appropriate training so that employees can perform well • Pay employees at fair rates • Reward employees who perform well • Implement fair systems, including disciplinary systems
ENCOURAGING COMMITMENT (cont.) Beyond establishing fair and acceptable human resource management systems, employers can take action to find out: • What do employees want? • Which organizational policies are causing problems to employees? • What keeps employees happy and what does not?
ENCOURAGING COMMITMENT (cont.) To find out employees’ thoughts on a range of matters, employers conduct formal opinion/attitude surveys. Common topics included in a survey relate to satisfaction with: • Their jobs, • The supervision they receive, • Their understanding of the company’s vision and mission
