What does articulation mean? Articulationrefers to the style in which a song’s notes are played. Articulationcan be indicated by marks, like dots or lines, or with a written out word, like “pizzicato,” which means strings should be plucked with the finger instead of played with the bow. These marks and words change the way the notes are played.
Accents Definition: stressor emphasis on a musical note What it looks like in music:
Notice how these accent markings look like miniature hairpin decrescendo markings. That is exactly how they should be played, with an emphasis at the beginning of the note!
See? Accents are just tiny decrescendos!! ACCENT DECRESCENDO
Legato vs. Staccato LEGATO Means smooth and connected. It can be indicated with a slur marking, or just the word itself, written in the music. STACCATO Means short and separated, and is indicated by putting a dot beneath the note (Don’t forget! Legato is the opposite of Staccato!)
In fact, Staccato notes are so short, they are actually played like this: Staccato quarter notes are actually played as eighth notes!
Col Legno • This type of bow stroke is played with the wood of the bow instead of the hair. In fact, “legno” literally means “wood” in Italian. • It should be pronounced in 3 syllables like “kohleyn-yoh” • Click here to hear the correct pronunciation of the term one more time!:
