The official language is French • Democratic rule was restored in 2006, two years after a violent revolt ousted former leader • bitter political divisions persist • Four tropical storms in 2008 severely damaged the transportation infrastructure and agricultural sector • 66% of work force are farmers • No military force (Army, Navy, Air Force) • Haiti does have a small Coast Guard

Some people are salvaging materials from destroyed buildings to build temporary shelters.
Soccer stadium used as temporary shelter. Families with out shelter are gathering in a city park.
Due to the lack of food and shelter – some people are attempting to “escape” the capital city.
WATER The earthquake damaged city water pipes. This is forcing people to find other sources for drinking water. This women is collecting water above a sewer.
Clean water began to reach the capital city 10 days after the earthquake. Haitian families gathering clean water.
