  5. PBIS At Cradlerock Elementary School, students will be: • Respectful • On Task • Cooperative • Kind

  6. Daily Take Home Folder • will contain any completed work and your child’s monthly communication calendar • folder and calendar should be returned to school each day

  7. Homework • Your child will bring home their Word Study Journal and math homework in their Take Home Folder on the first day of the school week. • They will have 2 days of Language Arts homework and 2 days of math homework. • Please complete the homework gradually throughout the week and return the Word Study Journal and math homework on Friday. • Homework will be checked for completion by the homeroom teacher. • Homework should not take more than 20 minutes each night. Thank you for your support with homework!

What We Learn in First Grade . . . • Math – Number Concepts, Number Operations, Geometry, Measurement and Data, Basic Facts, Computational Fluency • Language Arts - Phonics, Word Recognition, Fluency, Comprehension (literature and informational texts) • Writing – Opinion, Informative, Narrative, Realistic Fiction or Folktales

What We Learn in First Grade . . . • Science—(Next Generation Science Standards) Plant and Animal: Structure & Function, Patterns in Space Systems, Light, Sound • Social Studies—Working Together, Our World of Cultures, Communities at Work, Our Changing World • Health—Social and Emotional Health, Safety, First Aid and Injury Prevention, Nutrition and Fitness and Disease Prevention and Control

  13. What Does Math Look Like Everyday? • 75 minutes daily • Begins with a high-quality number routine • Standards based instruction: high quality tasks, variety of representations, purposeful questions, and student discourse • Closure everyday

  15. Grading Policy I-Independent * Student is doing an amazing job and completing assignments independently and correctly. W-With Assistance * Student has completed the assignment correctly with strong assistance or guidance from the teacher. N-Not Apparent * Student does not show mastery or shows partial mastery of the assigned skill at this time.

  16. Flexible Grouping • We will exercise flexible grouping throughout the year to ensure your child receives the appropriate levels of instruction at all times.

  17. G/T Curriculum Extension Units (CEU) First Grade CEUs: Children Like Me (pull out) Art of Language (pull out) • These units are interdisciplinary advanced-level content, reading, writing, & thinking skills • 2 CEUs per grade per year lasting approximately 9-12 weeks each • Each unit requires 1-2 hours of instruction per week with the G/T Resource Teacher • Multiple criteria used for the selection process

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing Administered for Reading and Math Fall Administration: October (possibly September for 1st grade) Winter Administration: End of January-February Spring Administration: May Measures student growth over time Provides preliminary benchmark of College and Career Readiness (CCR) Assesses instructional strengths and needs Supports differentiated instruction in the classroom Parents receive progress reports after each administration

  19. Volunteers Classroom Volunteers start Oct. 2nd Prior to volunteering, one must complete training at http://www.hcpss.org/parents/volunteer-information/.

  20. Field Trip Chaperone Selection Process Chaperones will be selected per homeroom class based on the order in which forms are received. After the first field trip, chaperone requests from parents/guardians who have not attended a previous field trip this school year will take first priority.
