Objectives • SWBAT explain and follow all lab safety rules • SWBAT identify various pieces of lab equipment and explain their functions • SWBAT accurately take measurements using various pieces of lab equipment
Lab Equipment Stations • There are six stations set up around the room. • At each station: • Record the notes in the section of your graphic organizer • Then, follow the directions at each station and record your measurements in the graphic organizer. • Your job is to identify and record each object on the chart on your notes. • Objects 2, 4, and 5 will also require measurements. Make sure you record those accurately!! • When you have finished, return to your seat and begin working on the Review Questions • Expectations
Station 1: Ruler • Use: • Measures the length, width, or height of an object • Units: • Inches (in) or centimeters (cm)
Station 1: Ruler • Use the ruler to record the following measurements: • Object 1 in inches • Object 2 in centimeters • Object 3 in inches • Object 4 in centimeters
Station 2: Graduated Cylinder • Use: • Accurately measures smaller volumes of liquids • Units: • Milliliters (mL)
Station 2: Graduated Cylinder • Record the initial water level in mL. • Add Object 1 to the graduated cylinder. • What is Object 1’s volume? (Hint: Subtract initial water level from new water level to calculate the water displacement) • Repeat with objects 2 and 3.
Station 3: Beaker • Use: • Measures larger volumes of liquids • Units: • Milliliters (mL)
Station 3: Beaker • Record the volumes for Cups 1, 2, and 3.
Station 4: Triple Beam Balance • Use: • Measures the mass of an object • Units: • Grams (g)
Station 4: Triple Beam Balance • Calculate and record the mass of Objects 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Station 5: Light Microscope • Use: • Used to observe the general features of cells or tiny organisms
Station 5: Microscope Slide & Cover Slip • Use: • Used to hold and cover samples for viewing under the microscope
Station 4: Light Microscope • We will be using light microscopes later in the year. At this point, turn on the microscope and simply try to adjust it so that you can see the slide! Draw what you see on the slide. • *Please turn off the light!
