What is Podcasting? • Podcasting is the catch all phrase that describes providing audio content over the internet • Audio files are downloaded in MP3 or MP4 Format
Podcasting Myths • Playback - You need to have a MP3 Player such as iPod or other brand • Creator - You need to have lot of expensive equipment to create a Podcast
Why create a Podcast? • Online Classes - adds another dimension to your class • Face to Face classes - allows you to provide audio content and not take up class time
Creating a Podcast • What hardware you need • What software
Podcasting Hardware • Good quality microphone • Most are USB interface • Most will have headphones • DO NOT need to purchase expensive recording equipment
Podcasting Software • Macintosh - Garage Band - $49.00 • Windows and MacintoshAudacity - Free • Web Hosting - with Podcasting • Web CT or Blackboard
What do you need to Listen? • You do NOT need a MP3 Player • You will need audio player such as • iTunes • Windows Media Player
A Successful Podcast • Plan • Write • Produce • Post Production • Finalized - Publish
Recommendation • From my experience, it is best to write an outline or full script before you record your Podcast • Helps you stay on topic and focused • Have Fun - develop a radio personality :-)
Recommendations • Getting your students to listen: • Podcast Only Information • Place inside the Podcast important information so the student will need to listen to the Podcasts • Ideas - Place links for Web Site articles, bonus points or Podcast only assignments
Getting the Students the Files • There are two methods to get the students the files • Links to Download • Subscription with RSS • Each week students will expect a podcast to enhance their learning experiences
Download Files • You can create a link on your web page • Student download file just like a PDF file, Word Document or JPG • Issue: Student really need fast internet connection
Download Files • Student can go to open lab or library computers and download them to their USB Flash Drives • Talk with your IT staff to help with this
Technical Support • Provide a Web Page with instructions and Technical information • Links to Players • Email or Link to IT • Get IT staff trained • Get IT staff to be supportive
RSS • Really Simple Syndication • Allows students to subscribe and then the podcast will get downloaded automatically • Need a RSS services • Can get a EDU site at iTunes store
Podcast Bonus • Can also include Graphics - JPEG’s • Photos • Illustrations • Diagrams • Materials from your Textbooks • URL’s
Podcast Tips • Record and reuse elements • Do not date stamp • Or you will have to record a new Podcast each semester ! • Keep it Simple at First • Have Fun with it !

Garageband • From Apple, very easy to use • Can learn in about two hours • Post to Web Site or Web CT/Blacboard learning space.
