What’s Changing ? ? • TV : Widescreen (4:3 -> 16:9), Larger Screens • TV : Analog -> Digital Broadcasting • TV : High Definition : 576i -> 1080 Vertical lines • TV : VCR -> PVR-HDD (VHS tapes obsolete) • TV : DVD -> High-Def or Blu-Ray Disk (50Gb) • PC : Analog -> Digital Monitors (SXGA, WXGA) • PC : Repository for Photos, Music, Movies etc • PC : New Inputs - TV Tuner, Games Systems • PC : Wireless Home Networking • Confusing . . . . Obsolesence . . . .

  5. Pixel Counts - PC & TV PAL = 576 lines * 720 pixels HD = 720 lines * 1280 pixels Tru-HD = 1080 lines * 1920 pixels WXGA (16:9) = 1360* 768

  6. Distortion occurs, many places . . Analog - Send actual signal Faithfully recreate the signal – undistorted . . Digital - Sample & Send values Analog vs Digital TV Thus TV moving from Analog -> Digital. Original AU Completion 2008, now 2009/2012

Implications of Digital Broadcasting • Digital allows higher density (High Definition), more dots/pixels/lines (576 -> 1080), surround sound • Digital gives options – more channels (ABC2, SBS-News) different angles (esp. sport), interactive ? • Digital signal close to Analog equivalent, (eg. 7D on Ch6) so can use existing TV aerial system • But many existing TVs cannot handle Digital TV . . . . • Need Conversion unit – Set-Top Box Std Def $70-$100, Hi Def $150-$300, PVR ->$400+ • Newer TVs have Dual Tuners (Analog & Digital) (and even multiple Digital tuners . . .) • Confusion re High Definition - what qualifies ?

Australian Hi-Def TV Standards Existing Standard Definition • 576i (576 horizontal lines interlaced)- Data Rate: 5-7 Mbps- 576 horizontal lines interlaced x 720 pixels/line High Definition Picture Formats • 576p (576 horizontal lines progressive)- transmitted by SBS- data rate: 10-13 Mbps- 576 horizontal lines progressive x 720 pixels/line • 720p (720 horizontal lines progressive)- transmitted by ABC- data rate: 10-13 Mbps- 720 horizontal lines progressive x 1280 pixels/line • 1080i (1080 horizontal lines interlaced)- transmitted by Seven, Nine, Ten- data rate 13-15 Mbps- 1080 horizontal lines interlaced x 1440 or 1920 pixels/line

Today’s DVD - 4.7 Gb (8.5 Gb Dual Layer ) insufficient for HD movies, where 1080 = 3 * Current DVD size • High Definition DVD = 15 Gb (30Gb DL) – endorsed by HD-Forum Toshiba, LG, NEC, Intel, Microsoft, Paramount, Universal . . . . • Blu-ray = 25Gb (50Gb DL) - endorsed by Sony, Panasonic, LG, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, 20thCentury, Buena Vista • Blu-ray can have embedded Java – Key for PC-Games Industry Akin to the BetaMax vs VHS, struggle of 1975 – 1985 • Real driver is Movie Industry - Warner (largest, 20%) initially supporting bothBUT . . .. • Jan-2008, Warner statement : Blu-Ray ONLY from June-08 ! • Toshiba dropped HD prices ( HD-EX1 $1599 -> $1299 -> $599 +10 movies )
