Need and Commitment “The Illinois Board of Higher Education recognizes that student and faculty diversity enhances the education of all students and offers direct and indirect public benefits to our state and nation. Diverse learning environments positively affect students’critical thinking skills, their civic commitment, and preparation for work in a global economy, among other benefits.The IBHE and its public colleges and universities are committed to making the utmost efforts, and using all legal means,to advance diversity in higher education.”
So, What Have We Accomplished ? 1. Spring 2004-Introduce DFI Legislation 3. August 4, 2004- DFI Act Signed into Law as P.A. 93-0862 2. July 20, 2004-Diversity Summit 4. December 7, 2004 DFI Program Board Appointments
Highlights of the DFI Program Legislation • Combined two State of Illinois minority graduate fellowship programs • Charged IBHE to create a policymaking program board
The Program Board Shall Include: • 21 members from across all sectors and geographic regions • Individuals in leadership positions at institutions of higher education • Individuals with significant backgrounds in higher education diversity issues
The Program Board Shall Include: • Representatives from Doctoral degree granting institutions • Community college representation • Racial minorities who are traditionally underrepresented in post-secondary education
Key Information • FY 2005 - 196 Fellowship Awards (127 continuing fellows and 69 new fellows) • Ongoing leadership of the institutional representatives at participating campuses • IBHE Staff and SIUC Staff continues to provide leadership and administrative support for the program during transitional period • Administrative Rules
