What do Freshman need to know? • ALL of our students will graduate with a college and career ready transcript. • Our school environments are positive, structured, and students enjoy a wide-range of activities and athletics. • All Spokane High Schools have closed campus lunch for 9th graders.
What do teachers need to know? • Students will graduate on time and with a transcript which allows them all post-secondary options. • All students encouraged take “stretch-classes” such as AP, 4 years of science, math, etc. • What used to be thought of as “electives” are not “electives” anymore. (1 year Art, 1 year CTE graduation requirements). • Very little, if any, room for failure.
PSAT, SAT, ACT, Compass, AP, ASSET, ASVAB testing on campus We partner with all the local colleges and universities – Running Start, course articulations, on-site visits, college reps at our schools. Creating a College-Going Culture
High Expectations for ALL Students • Every student leaves LC and Ferriswith a transcript ready for College or Career pathway • Advanced Placement • 20 different AP classes offered at LCand Ferris • PSAT for all 10th-11th grade students • SAT for all 11th grade students • Strong focus on improving high school graduation rates • All seniors complete a college application & FASFA
Plan for Freshman Success • 9th grade transition team • Advisory MAPS class for all students with a focus on T-2-4 at LC • Freshmen Success First at Ferris • Alpha counselors • AVID • CAPS (SpEd) • CORE • Winter School & Spring School (an opportunity to improve grades prior to semester’s end)
9th Grade Choice • Students will select – Math, Science, English, & Social Studies courses • We highly recommend they take Fitness/Health in 9thgrade. That leaves one elective choice at 9th grade • If they want two electives: such as AVID, PLTW/Biomedical Science, PLTW/Pre-Engineering, Band/Choir, or World Language, postponing Fitness & Health is approved. • Can be done via SVL or later in High School
Pre-AP, Stretch, and AP Course Options • English: (required summer assignment) • World History: (AP WH –Ferris) (AP Euro – Ferris/LC) • Math: Geometry (pre-req: Algebra) or Algebra 2 (pre-req: Geometry) • Science (Chemistry or Physics - LC) (Biology and/or PLTW - Ferris) • AP Computer Science (pre-req: Algebra 1) (Ferris) • AP Human Geography (LC) – elective only • NO application required • We encourage students to challenge themselves with these courses. Students can take any or all of the courses.

AP Diploma • The AP Capstone Diploma will give students new ways to stand out in college applications and build a stronger foundation in independent research, presentation, collaborative teamwork, with knowledge and skills essential for success in college and beyond. • To earn the AP Capstone Diploma: • Earn scores of 3 or higher on a minimum of 5AP examinations. • Earn a passing score on the AP Seminar Course (11th)and Research project and the AP Capstone Course (12th)
PLTW/Pre-Engineering/Technological Design Year-long CTE elective for students who: Are problem solvers Enjoy creating new things Like to know how things work Think about ways to make things work better Want to find new ways to apply math & science PLTW (Ferris- 4-year course of study leads to college credit)
PLTW/Bio-Medical Science Year-long CTE elective “Real world” science, university-level research Hands-on activities Solving mysteries like TV’s House or CSI Learning about cutting-edge careers in medicine and biotechnology Career and CollegeReady elective Can be part of a 4-year course of study
Intro to Computer Science This is a program for students who: Is interested in technology. Likes hands-on activities. Likes to solve complex problems. Is creative. Leads into AP Computer Science Students can join the CyberPatriots club which focuses on cyber-defense.
SVL Options Students can take SVL courses over the summer or during the school year to free up elective space. Student athletes (school or private club sports) can take the Athlete Fitness Credit option – their sport will count for the fitness portion, and they will complete SVL curriculum for the academic portion. It is very helpful if students write that they plan to take ANY SVL course on their registration form.
