The data and information challenge • Data explosion and data overload • By 2020 35 zetabytes (ZB = 1021 bytes) of digital data created per annum • In 2024 the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope will produce more data than can be processed • Data complexity • Changing expectations • Digital divide • Fourth paradigm of data intensive science
