Goal 1: The Eradication of Extreme Poverty and Hunger • Australia is increasing food production and distribution in Asia and Africa and there has been an increase in the yield of the 5 staple food crops in east Timor • Australia has supported community development programs. People have been given the skills and the confidence to overcome poverty • Australia has assisted the drop in the number of people living in hunger and poverty by improving the quality of agriculture and infrastructure and also improving the number of employment opportunities available.
Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education • The enrolment of children in schools has increased, with 89% of children now enrolled • Australia has worked with the governments of Asia, the Pacific region and Africa to build schools, improve the standard of teaching staff and reduce school fees for poor families • Australia has supported the Education for All fast track initiative • Australia has helped to give opportunities for learning to children with learning disabilities
Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women • Australian aid has helped developing countries to improve education for girls • Australia has increased assistance to address violence against women in Melanesia and east Timor • Australia has supported women as leaders in government, businesses and in the community
Goal 4: Reducing Child Mortality • Australia has helped to implement successful child immunisation programs in developing countries • Immunisation levels increased from, 56% to 79% in 2009 • Australia has assisted in improving child nutrition
Goal 5: Improving Maternal Health • Australia has assisted in the training of birth attendants and midwives in the Aisa Pacific Region • Women have been given better health services in rural areas
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases • Australia has helped to reduce malaria in the Asia pacific region • Australia has increased the number of testing and counselling sites for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS • Australia has assisted with finding better ways of finding and treating tuberculosis and other non communicable diseases
Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability • Australia has helped countries to adapt to the impact of climate change • Australia has helped to protect the biodiversity of countries • Australia has helped developing countries to lower carbon growth and to promote environmental sustainability through international and regional programs • Australia’s water and sanitation initiatives have helped to increase safe drinking water, an improvement in hygiene practises and sanitation.
