  1. World Population Trends Learning Goal 1 – Describe world population patterns and describe how human and physical features affect the world settlement patterns Criteria for Success – Students will understand the overall world population pattern Students will understand the different human and physical features and factors that impact population patterns

  2. Warm up • Write the following question on the left side in your Cornell notes and provide an answer on the right side • Which of the vocabulary terms would have the biggest impact on population growth? Justify your answer.

  3. Video • Watch the following video • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbkSRLYSojo • Answer the following questions in your ISN • What is the general trend of population growth? • What led to decreases in countries population?

  4. Physical Features • Essential Question – How do physical features impact population trends? • With a partner answer the following question in your ISN – Which physical feature could sustain a higher population, a desert or a river valley? Why?

  5. Why would fewer people be able to live here?

  6. Compared to here?

  7. Earliest civilizations

  8. Early Civilizations cont • All early civilizations arose near a major source of water. • These major water ways were vital for several reasons • Humans need fresh water to survive • As civilizations arose they needed agriculture • These new farms need irrigation from these water sources • As time elapses these water ways are used as ports

  9. Major shifts in population • How did the following eras impact population. Write the era on the left hand side and your justification on the right • Neolithic Revolution • The Age of Exploration • Industrialization • Modern Medicine

  10. Neolithic Revolution • First permanent settlements • Farming emerges as does domesticating livestock • Surplus of food allows higher population

  11. Age of Exploration • Columbian Exchange • Diseases in the New World • New crops and animals allow for increased populations

  12. Industrialization • Major shift towards urbanization • Shift towards a “more developed” nation • Usually precedes an increase in population

  13. Modern Medicine • Most important factor in population growth • Creation of vaccines, antibiotics, medicine • Better understanding in spreading of bacteria / diseases (Surgical operations in civil war vs today) • Emergence of hospitals and better trained professionals • Emergence of birth control / contraceptives / education

  14. Write down the following questions and answer them as the video plays • What was the population in 1900? • What was it in 2000? • What is it projected to be in 2100? • What grows faster, less developed or more developed countries? • How has life expectancy changed over the past 60 years? • What has led to population growth slowing down? • How much has the global fertility rate dropped in the last 50 years? • What are the 2 biggest factors in the fertility rate? • Based on the graphs what will happen to the populations in Japan and Niger? • Where is urbanization occurring at a faster rate?

  15. Read two of the following articles • http://www.unitedhumanrights.org/2011/02/ukrainian-famine • http://www.unitedhumanrights.org/2009/05/the-genocide-in-rwanda • http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/black_death_of_1348_to_1350.htm • http://virus.stanford.edu/uda/

  16. Writing Response • Using ACE : • Write 1 ½ pages in response to the following question • What are the two main factors which lead to a decrease in population? • Cite each article you use at least three times
