  2. Shield volcanoes • Shield volcanoes are very large and have gradual slopes. They look like mountains. • Shield volcanoes rarely erupt violently. • Their eruptions consist of large lava flows. • The lava is smooth and slow moving.

  6. Composite Volcanoes • Composite volcanoes are large with steep slopes. • The material from these eruptions falls back down on the cone, increasing its size with each eruption.

  7. Composite Volcanoes • Because composite volcanoes are formed from layers of previous eruptions, they have layered interiors. • Thick lava can flow up through fissures on the sides or out the top.

  8. Composite volcanoes • Eruptions of composite volcanoes can be violent spurts of rock and lava chunks, ash or there can be thick lava flowing up through fissures.

  9. Cinder Cone volcanoes • Cinder cone volcanoes are small and steep sloped. • They form when a vent ejects lava/rock and it falls back down.

  12. Famous volcanoes • Mt. Etna- Sicily. First recorded volcanic eruption (475 B.C.). Still active. • Vesuvius- Italy. Buried 2000 people ( in Pompeii) in ash in 79 A.D. It is now extinct. • Mauna Loa- Hawaii. The largest volcano in the world. • Mount Saint Helens-Washington State. Had its first eruption in 120 years in 1980. • Krakatau- Indonesia. Eruption in 1883 produced one of the largest explosions ever recorded on Earth.
