How Western got their nickname… • The Bronco’s nickname dates back to 1939 and was submitted by a WMU alumnus John Gill. • Before the name Broncos came along, the nickname Hill Toppers was used reflecting the college’s original Prospect Hill campus. • The name Hill Topper was changed due to other institutions having a similar name. • Later in 1988, “Buster Bronco” became Western’s mascot and is well known by everyone still today. http://www.wmich.edu/wug/other-resources/wmu-graphics/bronco-logo.html
