  2. I dreamed I stood in a studio And watched two sculptors there. The clay they used was a young child’s mind And they fashioned it with care

  3. One was a teacher; The tools he/she used were books and music and art; One was a parent With a guiding hand and a gentle loving heart.

  4. And when at last their work was done They were proud of what they had wrought For the things they had worked into the child Could never be sold or bought.

Goals for 2012 - 2013 • To nurture each student’s strengths and talents • To determine areas of concern in each student and provide support and growth opportunities in these areas • To help each student determine his or her best effort, and to work with the student to achieve “Excellence through Effort!”

  10. Homework Policy Purpose is fourfold: • Extend concepts learned in the classroom. • Provide opportunities for independent work. • Strengthen concept and skill development. • Provide enrichment opportunities.

  11. Homework Policy • Should take no more than 60 to 75 minutes a night. • Is due on the assigned day unless illness or death in the family prevented it. Additional time will be given. • Please notify teacher with a note, call, or email.

Williamsburg • Turn in lunch choice and money by September 28th • Return Financial Responsibility Form • Return permission slip and $68.00 by Oct. 26th • Send McDonald’s money with student on the day of the trip • If chaperoning please choose a lunch by September 28th and pay $30.00 by Oct. 26 • No lunches or food allowed to be taken into Williamsburg (unless food allergies) • Water bottles are allowed

  16. Social Studies – 5th Grade Unit One – Citizens in Action: The Colonies Revolt 1763 – 1783 Unit Two – Economics: Creating a New Nation 1783 – 1800 Unit Three – The Evolving Country: Geography Past to Present

  17. Science Curriculum • Unit One: Force, Motion, and Energy • Unit Two: Electricity and Magnetism • Unit Three: Astronomy • Unit Four: Cells and Heredity Science MSA will be in late April.

  18. Science/Health Curriculum • Family Life Unit taught in the spring. • Takes place toward the end of May. • Students are able to do alternate work if parents choose to have them do so. • Sessions will be held in early spring for parents to review materials and discuss concepts.

Reading • Taught for literary experience, reading to inform and reading to perform a task. • Study story elements and reading strategies through core books, National Geographic, and other approved media for instruction. • Students will have nightly reading assignments to reach the grade level goal of 25 books for the school year.

  20. Writing • Writer’s Workshop is used, and we focus on the 6+1 Traits model of writing • Ideas • Voice • Conventions • Organization • Sentence Fluency • Word Choice • + Presentation

  21. Specials • Art, Music, Physical Education, Band, Chorus • Art, Music, PE, and Media are once a week • Chorus is on Thursday afternoons • Band is taught once a week for 35-45 minutes • Students will have band buddies to ensure they get materials presented in class while they were gone.
