Time to do course • 3 lessons per week • Tight concentrated course • schools start in previous term 4 • Therefore, every TAFE lesson is important • We have about 24 weeks to complete this course • … including assessments, research project, mapping skills and 3 major topics!
Advantages of TAFE Geography • I studied geography at Sydney TAFE for HSC • new friends • No uniforms • No bells to end lessons • Chance to work in an ADULT environment • You will save money by coming to class…not shopping or going to movies!! • learn something new • new things to discuss… • Feel good about yourself when you succeed!
Disadvantages of TAFE Geography • You need to be self disciplined – study each night, listen in class, work out a study program and practice writing answers regularly • You need to turn up to class on time • You need to turn off your mobile phone in class • You need to turn off MP3 players, iPods in class • Concentrating for 2 hour lessons can be hard..
Equipment you will need • One geometric drawing compass • One clear 30 cm ruler • 3 lead pencils and sharpener • A 360º Protractor • Eraser • Highlight Pens • Small packet of coloured pencils eg. Derwent, Faber Castel or Crayola (not $2 shop varieties as these break easily)
Equipment continued…. • Biros • 30 cm string • Stapler • A 4 Ring Binder • Loose leaf paper or lecture pad – NOT EXERCISE BOOKS • Plastic sleeves • Flash Drive for saving work from the computer – suggest up to 1 GB if you like using graphics • Glue Stick – DO NOT BUY CHEAP ONES – Uhu best brand! • Calculator – spare batteries

Topics to be studied…. Preliminary course for those who have not completed Year 11 but important for Year 12 work HSC course - Ecosystems including two case studies • Urban Places including a case study of Sydney and research project • Economic Activity – Tourism – global study and case study - Fieldwork – compulsory and integral part of the course and possible separate exam questions - Senior Geography Project – urban issues - Mapping and Statistical skills – maps, tables, graphs, diagrams, photos, aerial photos, satellite images
Why study Geography? • Jobs that require geographic knowledge: - Travel consultants and operators - Local council employees eg. Planners, Catchment Management Officers - Architects and Landscape Designers - Surveyors - Cartographers (map makers eg. UBD street directory company or Lands Dept) - Bus, coach and taxi drivers - Tour Guides - National Parks Rangers and Forestry workers - Landscape Gardeners - Farmers, Vineyard Operators, Ski Resort workers

Geography is about the earth and our relationship with it…..
Finally…how do I study Geography? • Have a quiet area at home or go to the library each day/night • Use highlight pens to pick out important facts • Sticky notes to mark pages • stick reminder notes at eye level at home with vital facts written on them • Practice writing every day • Reading is not studying • Look at exam papers for last 5 years • If I do not have a computer – use the library or your local library – buy a USB drive!
How much study? • You need to study every day • At least 2 hours per day • Even if assignments are not due you should revise each lesson • Practice writing exam answers • Plan a study timetable and stick to it – see teacher or Counsellors on Ground Floor • Have a goal and stick to it! • YOU HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT OTHERWISE WORK FOR A YEAR then come back to us…
