Lions are disappearing rapidly Parks are not enough solution
Approx. 30,000 lions >50% are in Tanzania • Good planning • Extensive Wilderness • Few People • Tourism and Hunting
Kenya: fewer than 2000 lions • Mostly small parks with no buffers • Extensive bushmeat poaching and AK-47’s • Poison • Tourism but no hunting
LAIKIPIA PREDATOR PROJECT 1997- The Laikipia Predator Project (LPP) is working with the KWS , Ranchers and Communities in Laikipia to develop practical measures which encourage coexistence between people, livestock and predators.
For 15 years: Restored Lions population (-100 to 250) i.e. 6-7/100sqk Recognized has number 3rd lion strong hold in the Country.
LPP Goal • To devise lion conservation strategies • To protect livestock from predators • To ensure that local people gain significanteconomic value from lions and other wildlife, to offset the cost of living with them.
Do Lions Benefit Laikipia People? 15-20MUS$ Laikipia's tourism employs approximately 1300 people, creating approximately 196m Kenya Shillings in wage earnings per year. Each employee has an average of 5 dependents meaning that through employment about 6500 people are directly dependent on tourism.
