Making up and standardising a standard solution • You are required to make up a 1 M solution of sodium hydroxide in a 250ml volumetric flask. • 1) First work out the amount of sodium hydroxide you need. • 2) Use a weighing bottle to measure out the required mass. Record the initial mass of the empty bottle. • 3) Dissolve the solid in a little distilled water and transfer to the volumetric flask. • 4) Wash out the beaker and make up to the mark. • 5) If there seems to be a significant amount of solid left in the weighing bottle reweigh it to obtain the actual mass added. • 6) Standardise your solution by pipetting 25mls and titrating it against the 1 M solution of hydrochloric acid provided. • 7) From your results calculate the actual concentration of your solution. • 8) Calculate the % error.
