Background and aims • This is one of a series of regional events • It aims to address issues of concern and explore the variety of information sources and support for patients, carers and the public through health library provision • It intends to create an action plan of ways for NHS library staff to promote health information for patients, carers and the public.
National context Putting the patient first • NHS Constitution:2009 – rights, pledges and responsibilities for staff & patients. To make choices and access to information to support choices • Liberating the NHS: An Information Revolution: 2010. Health information to be provided to patients in a range of formats and levels of needs • The Francis Report: 2013: Independent inquiry into the care provided by NHS Mid Staffordshire • Local Trust strategic plans and objectives
LQAF 5.3l Library/knowledge services are developed to support information provision for the patient and/or the public.
Health literacy: our challenge • Recent research from London South Bank University found that 43% of people in England are unable to properly understand everyday medical information and instructions • Solutions are needed to ensure health information is more easily understood • http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/news-php/news.php?newsid=772 • ‘There are 34.1million adults in England aged 16 -65 years; this means that between 15-21 million people of working age across the country may not be able to understand and use the information they need to look after their health’.
Regional context • Health Education South West vision: • ‘People in the South West will experience the very best care from staff who receive excellent training and development…. Our strategy has the NHS Constitution at its heart and we aim to include patients as an equal partner in our plans’.
Local context Activities could include: • Supporting our colleagues with health information initiatives, e.g. shared decision making / participatory medicine • Partnerships e.g. with PALS, public libraries, public health teams, Healthwatch • Activities and ideas from NHS libraries - shared today using our electronic poster display
