The Muscular System:Muscle Fibers • Bundles of threadlike structures called myofibrils • Composed of: • Myosin • Actin • Form overlapping pattern called sarcomere • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaNFWYO1lb4 1.04 Remember the structures of the muscular system
Muscles are made up of muscle fibers which are made up of myofibrils which are broken into segments called sarcomeres which have thin actin filaments and thick myosin filaments that slide across each other to produce the shortening of muscle contractions. 1.04 Remember the structures of the muscular system

How do skeletal muscles get their names? • Location • frontalis = forehead • Size • Gluteus maximus = largest in buttock • Direction • External abd oblique = oblique means slanted • Number of origins • Biceps = two headed muscle • Location of origin and insertion • Sternocleidomastoid = originates in sternum • Action flexor • Flexor carpi ulnaris = flexes wrist • Extensor • Extensor carpi ulnaris = extends wrist • However, not all muscles are named by the above methods! 1.04 Remember the structures of the muscular system
