What is stress? • Forces affecting the individual • Internal/External • Physical, mental, or emotional strain/tension • Eustress vs. Distress
The Sympathetic Nervous System • “Fight or Flight” Response • Increased heart rate • Increased blood pressure • Increased alertness
Parasympathetic Nervous System • “Rest and Digest” system • Returning to a balanced/relaxed state • Slow heart rate • Pupils constrict
Eustress: “Good Stress” • Positive stress • Keeps a person healthy and happy • Stressors are challenges – not threats • Gives a feeling of fulfillment

Distress: “Bad Stress” • Negatively affecting a person’s health • Strain/Anxiety/Suffering • Mental pain/anguish • Harms immune system and causes illness

Emotional/Mental Effects: • Anxiety, restlessness, irritability, moodiness • Lack of motivation, indecisive • Sadness/depression, constantly worried • Forgetful, poor concentration I’m late!
