Write a paragraph using the key words. “Ferns” “Mosses” “Archegonia” “Antheridia” “Sporophyte” “Gametophyte” “Mitosis” “Meiosis”
Example • The dominant generation for ferns is the 2n sporophyte as opposed to the Mosses who are dominant as a gametophyte (n). Both ferns and mosses have the male antheridia and female archegonia which produce gametes by mitosis. After fertilisation the sporophyte grows until the sporangia divides by meiosis to produce spores.
Label the gaps on your diagram of the life cycle of a fern. • Prothallus • Sori • Sperm swim to egg • Spores carried by wind • Zygote grows through prothallus • Zygote • Antheridium • Archegonium • Spores • Sporangium • Sporophyte
Question • Compare and contrast the reproductive cycle of the ferns and the mosses.
