  2. Definition • Gift • Unlike loans, grants do not need to be paid back • Designed for government, nonprofits, universities, or individuals • Popular tool of the government

  3. Types • Categorical grants: grants for a specific purpose • Block grants: grants for a purpose, but has a broad range of possibilities • General purpose assistance: has no use restriction and is from one level of government to another

  4. Facts • Most federal grant dollars are spent on formula grants, but the majority of grants are “project grants,” which are smaller in amounts • More grant money annual goes to individuals then for infrastructure • Types of grants change with presidencies

  5. Facts • A great bulk of the grant programs serve relatively narrow purposes • Decide how strictly they want to enforce the program guidelines • Most grants are one time grants

  6. Applying • Have it absolutely perfect • Follow the guidelines • Make sure that the your use of the grant fits into what the grant is for • Market
