ICALEPCS Liaison Peter Clout October 29th 2011
ICALEPCS Grenoble, a week ago. • Massive thanks to Albe, Christoph and others who pitched in to rescue a bad situation. • Although they were initially overlooked, the 500 each of the brochure, 2 leaflets and the current newsletter were stuffed into the bags. • The box of things for the booth were eventually found and put in place. • Recognition of the IEEE was hard to find in the ICALEPCS material.
ICALEPCS Worries • My concerns about ICALEPCS are: • Certainly the Europeans appear indifferent at best to the IEEE • Technically the content of the conference is like a computing newsletter – full of the latest wizz-bangs in computing and missing the bigger picture of automation – delivering the best beam/plasma density/celestial images • ICALEPCS is twice the size of RT and growing. RT is stable.
ICALEPCS Worries • Suggestion: • At the Santa Fe retreat we spend time discussing this with the organizers of the 2013 Berkeley ICALEPCS with a view to a proposal that will both bring the community fully into IEEE/NPSS and also energize it with an investment of NPSS reserves to introduce and promote techniques of automation that are available and are being implemented with great success in utilities and industry.
The Alternative • The reality RTC, compared with ICALEPCS, needs revitalizing to some degree. I believe that we have advantages for the community and resources and so lets exploit this. • The fields are not completely covering each other but once one gets to HEP and fusion, the machine is the experiment and so controls somewhat merge with the data acquisition. • Idea 1. Shift the continent of RTC such that any one continent sees either RTC or ICALEPCS every 3 years. • Idea 2. Consider what one might spend on special promotion. Advertising, expensive guest speakers, prizes, etc. etc. invite and pay for speakers in automation techniques. • Anything else? I am thinking significant investment, more than $50K…
Next Step • Up to us.
