  1. ATNF Operations • Time allocation statistics • TAC – proposed changes • ATOA update • Operations restructure • External user feedback

  2. Time allocation at Parkes and ATCA ~55% of time at Parkes is allocated to Large Projects ~40% of time at Compact Array is allocated to Large Projects ~60% of Parkes time is allocated to pulsar projects.

  3. TAC: Changes

  4. TAC: Changes - goals • Reduce the load on TAC members to about 15 – 20 proposals per semester • Increase the range of scientific expertise • Involve overseas users in the TAC process • Establish TAC process that is scalable • Aim to start new process for 2009APRS

  5. TAC: Proposed changes (not finalised) • Proposals reviewed by about six sub-panels, each with 3 or 4 members. • Each sub-panel has leader in Australia • All panel members access proposals through OPAL • Panels set up primarily by topic area • Panel leaders collate and merge comments for their subset of proposals • Panel leaders and TAC Chair meet to briefly review all proposals • ATNF provides TAC administration and meeting coordination

  6. ATOA Update • ATCA data loaded to 10 Feb 2008 • Now loading ATCA data (from tapes) to end-April 2008 • MOPS data now available for May – 26 Nov 2006 (same interface) • Next stages: • Load MOPS data to mid-July 2007 (data files already in Marsfield) • ATCA data streaming from Narrabri to Marsfield with ‘continuous’ loading • ATOA upgrades for CABB • Continue with MOPS transfer & loading • ATOA upgrades for VLBI

  7. ATNF Future Operations: User input So far: 3 March – 9 April: The Future Operations Plan was presented and discussed with USYD, UNSW, UTAS, Swinb, UWA, RSAA, ADFA 19 March: Open forum held in Marsfield What next?: End-May: Joint ATNF/ATUC summary of user input (Chapman & Sadler) June 1-5: McConnell& Chapman at AAS meeting in St Louis June 2008: ATNF response to points raised 11 June: ATCA Science Day in Marsfield End-July: version 2 of ‘ATNF Future Operations’

  8. Future Operations: Overview • Restructure Operations into Science Operations & Engineering Operations • Establish Science Operations Centre (SOC) at central location (initially Marsfield) • Streamline scheduling and observing modes 10
