  1. Change Management Igal Kaptsan Research Director Applied Research, Bentley Systems

  2. Topics • What is change management? • Infrastructure Project Challenges • Tie Design Phase to Project Lifecycle • Change Management building blocks

  3. What is change management? Change Management is about detecting changes and initiating appropriate responses to them.

  4. Infrastructure Project Challenges • Project teams include many participants from multiple companies from any part of the world with varying project delivery methods and contractual relationships • Each project has a unique and transient supply chain that comes together quickly, exists for a few years and the dissolves at the conclusion of the project. • Impossible to implement a single “system” for the all the functions of the entire supply chain. • Identifying, communicating and measuring the impact of change, which is at the heart of all projects, is problematic. • Reusing designs and design projects from past projects is difficult.

  5. Infrastructure Project Challenges • Changes are inevitable in infrastructure projects and are likely to occur from different sources, by various causes, at any stage of a project - and may have considerable impacts • There are diffident types of changes: • Elective or required • Discretionary or non-discretionary • Preferential or regulatory • This makes it imperative to have in place an effective change management regime in place However, it is impossible to effectively manage change if there is no reliable model that captures the dependency between the key project elements

  6. Tie Design Phase to Project Lifecycle Plan Requirements Concept Design / Implementation Construction Verification & Validation Operation & Maintenance Project Scope Requirements Capture and Management Detailed design Verification and Validation Design/Construction Variations Construction Work Packages Design is not a discrete activity. To achieve a full dependency model all phases need to be linked to each other and be aware of any changes done in any one of them at any point of time.

  16. Capture, Apply and Assess risk - Activity Management

  17. Daily Cost Monitoring Labor and equipment costs are estimated at beginning of the project. These estimated costs need to be validated against the actual project tracking document for labor and equipment costs.

  22. Use Cases Don’t approve a change without an Impact Analysis report… • Shorten the approvals cycle, Document and Component dependencies • Compliance assurance Requirements management • Capture, Apply and Assess risk Activity Management • Take control of your IP and reuse it Templates • Monitor engineering process Dash Board • Records and evidence of your business process Audit Trail

  23. Rules driven Notifications • Changes are examined against a list of Rules, and if they pass… • Notify interested parties • Initiate a business workflow • Trigger a batch operation • Any combination of the above Content definition & extraction Dependency viewing & authoring Identify & coordinate changes Rules driven Notifications Actions & Workflow

  24. Windows Workflow Foundation • Sequential Workflow • Typically Flow Chart based, progresses from one stage to next and does not step back) • State Machine Workflow • Progress from 'State' to 'State', these workflows are more complex and return to a previous point if required • Rules-driven Workflow • Implemented based on Sequential workflow. The rules dictate the progress of the workflow Content definition & extraction Dependency viewing & authoring Identify & coordinate changes Rules driven Notifications Actions & Workflow
