How Competition Affects Students • Teaches students the challenges and lessons of winning and defeat  • Depending on the child's temperament some will flourish while others become nervous and panicky.  • Helps show students abilities and limitations. • Helps students to set goals  • Helps develop problem-solving skills

Does competition foster a healthy learning/social environment? • Competition is a form of motivation that encourages students to reach their full academic potential • By forcing students to do their best, competition helps to promote self confidence • Students are motivated to try new things, like extracurricular activities because of competition with other students • Competition is most beneficial in moderation, otherwise it may have the opposite effects

Does competition foster a healthy athletic environment? • Internal competition among teammates leads to good work ethic in athletes, as they strive to gain more talent • Competition in sports teaches athletes that it will take hard work in college and the real world to stand out • Competition can turn dangerous in sports when an athlete’s strive to win becomes too strong, leading to unhealthy practices

  5. Pros of Competition • Personal development – competition allows students to interact with peers and adults. Sports are a good example of positive competition, helping one to learn their own abilities. • Teaches about a solid work-ethic: • Promotes practice and endurance. • Physical fitness – competition will increase the child’s desire to expand physical abilities. • Promotes self confidence. • Further motivates students. • Builds teamwork.

  6. Cons of Competition • Often increases peer pressure. • Can increase frustration. • Can change the physiology and minds of how students think of themselves. • Ex. Altering weight and causing students to become more dietary conscious

  7. Healthy Competition Students idea of competition is slightly different from tradition definition Generally two different types: Friend against Friend Rivalry between Non-Friends From competition, the performance in academics and athletics usually becomes better

Friend against Friend • This type of competition is common among students • Occurs in the classroom and the playing field • In the classroom • A pair of students or more compete for the highest grade in the class • Very friendly • The competitors feed off each • Sparks new ideas and produces outstanding results

  9. Friend against Friend • On the playing field • Occurs amongst teammates • Compete to become better players • Their games get elevated • Results in better practice habits and hard work

Comparison of High School Experiences • A 2010 high school experience is greatly difference on the surface than the characters experience in the novel • Modern Day Experience • Technology • Different Styles of Clothing • Myriad of Social Groups • Ranging from the best athletes to the smartest students • Language- slang

  11. High School Experience • 1942 Prep School • Conformity • Proper Language • No technology • More imaginative • Fewer Social Groups • Fewer types of people
