Citizenship Democratic republic Strong system of checks and balances 1 president (Oscar Arias Sanchez) 2 vice presidents (Laura Chinchilla, Kevin Zamora) Hold office for 4 years Many people attain dual citizenship rights in Costa Rica and the United States Highest literacy rate in Latin American countries (96%)
Economics • 9.2% inflation • 5% of employment rate • Coffee, beef, and bananas are main exports • Tourism: beaches, rain forest, national parks • Exports at risk for inflation • Dependency on imported oil • Large domestic debt
Conflict • Least violent Central American country • Illegal immigrants from Nicaragua • Crime is rising -drug smuggling & money laundering • Some attacks/kidnappings on tourists • Currently 8526 prisoners • No death penalty
Global Interaction • US most important trading partner -half of exports and imports • US + CR want to preserve tropical resources -2007, US reduced debt for conservation of rain forest • American citizens -30 to 50 thousand retirees -700,000 tourists
