The 7 Power Bases • At least seven forms or bases of power • Coercive • Legitimate or Positional • Expert • Reward • Referent • Informational • Connection
Coercive Power • Based on fear.
Legitimate Power • Based on position.
Expert Power • Based on one’s skill and knowledge.
Reward Power • Based on rewards, such as pay, promotion, or recognition.
Referent Power • Based on personal traits.
Informational Power • Based on access to information.
Connection Power • Based on links with important people.
Is there a best type? • Successful leaders use a variety or even all of them.
Power Systems • Formal • Easy to recognize and use. • Informal • Less obvious, but just as real. • Those not in charge influence those who are in charge.
