WHAT ARE THOSE NUMBERS? • Atomic mass is relative mass value of protons and neutrons. • Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus. It identifies the element. Protons do not move. • Mass number is sum of the protons and neutrons in nucleus. • In a neutral atom, the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons.
Ions have gained or lost electrons. • Charge = number of protons – number of electrons • Cation is a positively charged particle. • Anion is negatively charged particle.
Isotope are elements that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. This means that the mass number is different for each isotope. • Chemical and physical properties are similar. • Some are manmade. • Some are radioactive.
