  2. The Battle of the Bulge • Allied Force – West • Soviet Army – East • Hitler decided to face the war in the west • On December 6, German tanks broke in the Ardennes • Allied forces pushed German forces back and gained victory • Hitler had no choice but to retreat.

Germany’s Unconditional Surrender • 3 million Allied soldiers, 6 million Soviet troops • By April 25, 1945, the Soviets surrounded Berlin. • Hitler shot himself do death. • On May 7, 1945, General Eisenhower accepted the surrender of Third Reich. • On May 8, the official surrender of Nazi was signed. • V-E Day = Victory in Europe Day.

The Japanese Retreat • After the victory of the Allies at Guadalcanal, the Japanese started to retreat. • October of 1944, Allies landed on Leyte, • Within 3 days, Japanese fleets were all destroyed. Only forces were army and the kamikaze. • In March 1945, Iwo Jima • On April 1, Okinawa • The war ended on June 22.

The Atomic Bomb Brings Japanese Surrender • President Truman decided to use atomic bomb, or A-bomb • A-bomb = new weapon. • President decided to drop the bomb at Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. • On August 6, 1945 atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima. • On August 9, the U.S. dropped A-bomb to Nagasaki. • On September 2, General Douglas Macarthur surrendered Japan and the war ended.
