Revised Concept for the Masterclasses Video Conference members of the working group: • Laurenz Widhalm (coordinator) • Uta Bilow • Kate Shaw • Michael Hauschild
Topics we have worked on • aims of video conference • duration of video conference • integration of video conference into local event • elements of video conference • timing of video conference • preparation/training for moderators and local organizers
Material we produce(d) • A manual for local organizers (almost finished) • A manual for moderators (needs some more work) • A TWiki (synchronized & cross-linked with manuals) • Material for the revised quiz: • A collection of questions for the quiz • An animated Powerpoint presentation for the quiz • An answer sheet with new scoring system for students • Translated versions of the questions (need your help for that!)
Aims of Video Conference • convey internationality of the event • demonstrate how physicists work together internationally • exchange experiences of students between masterclasses • combination of different data sets to demonstrate improvement in accuracy • probably most important: FUN FOR THE STUDENTS! it should NOT aim at: • deepening the understanding of the physics (better done locally in the native language) • teaching English vocabulary of particle physicists (too much for a single day!) • basic discussion of the measurement (also better done locally) • a competition in the measurements („who is the best?“)
Duration of the Video Conference feedback of many students since many years: TOO LONG! strict time limit of 60 minutes! There has to be a clear, common end after an hour,to make it planable for local organizers; it has to beavoided that masterclasses leave the VC early one by onewith no clear end.
Integration of VC into local event • aim: have VC ~1h earlier • shorten local event: • 2x45' for talks covering SM and detectors • topics to be covered in the local talks are defined in the manuals (VC moderators need to know and rely on it!)
presentation of CERN in the VC • convey CERN as location: background image + a short live-view into the control rooms at the beginning of the vc(one-way transimission, no interactivity; shortly explained by moderators) • map showing CERN and the locations of theconnected institutes (shown in bkg or as insert) DO NOT show slides of CERN – students have seenthem before in the talks!
Timing of the Video Conference • common welcome & interactive icebreaker - 10' • report result of measurement by students – 15' • combination / discussion of measurement – 10' • open discussion – 15' • quiz - ~ 10' • common good bye
interactive welcome & icebreaker (10‘) • Common welcome, presentation of CERN (see above) • Moderators prepare casual questions • ask each masterclass one question and let them speak (so that they know they are not watching TV, but are an active part of the vc!) • no complicated questions (it should be possible to answer spontanously!) • prefer questions that can be answered by hand-raising
report by students of their results (15‘) • one or two speakers for the masterclass to bedefined by local organizers already before the vc • these speakers are given instructions and hints for the report • the report should not last more than 2 minutes • all reports are asked for in a row, not interrupted by questionsor comments (neither from moderator nor students) • afterwards, students have a chance to comment / ask questions
Combination (10‘) and Discussion (15‘) • after that, moderators combine results*, summarize and comment • another opportunity for mc's to comment/ask • after discussion of the measurement transition to a more opendiscussion * all mc's will do the same measurement on a day; however, a combination of similar measurements from different experiments is possible (e.g. W-path for CMS and Atlas)
Quiz (10‘) • bounding conditions: • no prizes, just for fun • multiple choice questions (4 answers) • everybody involved (plays on his/her own) • reveal correct answer immediatly after each question • scoring done by each student him/herself • no public comparison of scoring
Quiz Animated ppt slides (with timer)
Manuals for Moderators & Local Organizers the specific manuals contain all the information relevant for the respective target reader
These are our ideas... Let's try to make the video conference an even better experience for the students in 2012! Uta Bilow Michael Hauschild Kate Shaw Laurenz Widhalm
