5. What are learning styles? • Information enters your brain three main ways: sight, hearing and touch, which one you use the most is called your learning style • Visual learners learn by sight • Auditory learners learn by hearing • Tactile learners (kinesthetic) learn by touch

8. Auditory learners • Prefer to hear information spoken • Can absorb a lecture with little effort • May not need careful notes to learn. • Often avoid eye contact in order to concentrate • May read aloud to themselves • Like background music when they study Let me hear it!

9. Auditory or language learners Choose 5 most like you! These types learn through listening to what others have to say and talking about what they are learning. • They are also more likely to: • Like to talk • Talk to self • Lose concentration easily • Prefer spoken directions over written directions • Enjoy music • Read with whispering lip movements • Remember names • Sing • Cannot concentrate when noisy • Extroverted • Like listening • Prefer lecture and discussion • Prefer verbal praise from teachers

Visual learners • Prefer to see information such as pictures, diagrams, cartoons, demonstrations • Picture words and concepts they hear as images • Easily distracted in lecture with no visual aids • Overwhelmed with intense visuals accompanied by lecture • Benefit from using charts, maps, notes, and flash cards when studying Let me see it!

Visual learners • Visual learning characteristics include: • Thoughts wander during lectures • Observant but may miss some of what is said • Well organized • Like to read and show intense concentration while reading • Good speller • Remember better by seeing charts, diagrams, etc. • Concentrate well • Need to see directions; not hear them • Good handwriting • Good memory for faces but forget names • Plan ahead • Not really talkative • Attention to details As their name suggests, these people learn through watching. It is believed, to be the most dominant learning style and many traditional classrooms are geared towards the visual learner. For their learning to make sense they need to be able to see, visualize and illustrate their knowledge skills and concepts.

Tactile or kinesthetic learners Okay, I get it now. • Prefer touch as their primary mode for taking in information • In traditional lecture situations, they should write out important facts • Create study sheets connected to vivid examples • Role-playing can help them learn and remember important ideas Let me touch it!

These learners like to be actively involved in the learning process, and learn best through hands-on activities and movement. • Other kinesthetic characteristics are they: • Move around a lot • Prefer not to sit still • Move a lot while studying • Like to participate in learning • Like to do things rather than read about them • Do not prefer reading • Do not spell well • Enjoy problem solving by doing • Like to try new things • Talk with hands or gestures • Select clothes according to comfort • Like to touch objects

Remember!No matter what your Learning Style is, it’s very important to- • Be involved in class – participate! • Link classroom experience to the outside world • Relate class concepts to your own life. • Ask questions. • Stimulate further relevant discussion. • Don’t get distracted – stay “on-task” • Keep an open mind: there are many ideas beyond your own. All life is learning - it never stops!
